## update-motd

A simple framework for dynamically generating the Message Of The Day (`motd`)

Framework and scripts for producing a dynamically generated Message Of The Day.
Based on and compatible with the framework implemented Ubuntu.

### Branches

- The `amzn2` branch is what has been built in Amazon Linux 2
- The `al2023` branch is what has been built in Amazon Linux 2023
- The `main` branch is for any general development

Any new development should be done on `main` and any bug fixes can be cherry-picked back.

### History

The `update-motd` package first shipped with Amazon Linux AMI 2011.9 (now
known as Amazon Linux 1) back in 2011. It enabled the message of the day that
is displayed upon logging into an Amazon Linux instance to contain a reminder
of what security updates could be applied.

- Amazon Linux 1 (AL AMI)
  - `update-motd-1.0-1.5.amzn1` shipped in Amazon Linux AMI (AL1) 2011.09
  - `update-motd-1.0-1.9.amzn1` shipped as an update in AL AMI 2011.09
  - `update-motd-1.0.1-1.10.amzn1` shipped in AL AMI 2012.09
  - `update-motd-1.0.1-2.0.amzn1` shipped in AL AMI 2014.09
  - `update-motd-1.0.1-3.0.amzn1` shipped in AL AMI 2014.09
  - `update-motd-1.0.1-3.1.amzn1` shipped in AL AMI 2018.03 (not yet tagged in this repo)
- Amazon Linux 2
  - `update-motd-1.0.1-3.amzn2` was the first build for Amazon Linux 2
  - `update-motd-1.1.0-1.amzn2`
  - `update-motd-1.1.1-1.amzn2`
  - `update-motd-1.1.1-2.amzn2`

  - A tech preview period existed in which this release was labelled AL2022
  - `update-motd-2.0-1.amzn2023.0.2` was the first AL2023 build
  - `update-motd-2.0-1.amzn2023.0.3` shipped with the AL2023 GA release
  - `update-motd-2.1-1.amzn2023` shipped shortly after AL2023 GA, fixing a customer reported bug
